In a successful composting garden, you will always start by creating layers of ingredients that will "cook" down into healthy composted soil over time. If you have composted soil already on hand you can start with this healthy soil or you can purchase a small amount of pre-made compost to get your garden started.
To start your creating your own healthy soil begin by placing the cardboard box from your Vita kit in the bottom of your garden. Get the carboard nice and wet and then start layering with brown and green materials followed by a light watering on top. Repeat these alternating layers of brown, green and blue until your garden is full. You can leave some room at the top and add approximately 12-15 inches of soil if you plan to start planting right away.
Now, your garden is ready to go, all you need to do now is continue to add your brown and green materials into your garden's center composting basket and turn the soil over once or twice a week to promote air and nutrient flow.
Experts say that a ratio of 30:1 brown to green materials is ideal, meaning the majority of your compost ingredients should be brown with some organic green materials added in for nutrients.
